Debt Relief vs. Credit Repair: Which One Do You Need?

Debt relief changes what you owe or how you pay it. Credit repair checks whether what is reported about you is accurate. People searching for debt relief services or debt consolidation often land on credit repair companies, and the reverse, so this page sorts out which one fits which problem.

What "debt relief services" covers

Debt relief is an umbrella term. It usually means one of these:

  • Credit counseling and debt management plans. A nonprofit agency reviews your budget and may set up one monthly payment to your creditors, sometimes at lower interest rates.
  • Debt consolidation. You combine several debts into one new loan or balance transfer.
  • Debt settlement. You or a company negotiates with a creditor to accept less than the full balance. We cover this in detail in credit repair vs. debt settlement.
  • Bankruptcy. A court process with long-lasting credit consequences. Talk to an attorney.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains what a debt relief program is and how to judge one.

What debt consolidation does

Consolidation does not reduce what you owe. It replaces several payments with one, and it only saves money if the new interest rate and fees are lower than what you pay now, which depends on the rate you qualify for. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has a short guide on consolidating credit card debt.

What credit repair does

Credit repair is a review of your credit reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, followed by disputes of information that is inaccurate, incomplete or cannot be verified. It does not pay, reduce or settle a debt, and it cannot remove information that is accurate. That is the service Fix Your Credit Consulting provides, and how it works describes the process.

When credit repair is the right tool

  • Your reports show accounts, balances or late payments that are wrong
  • There are accounts you do not recognize, or signs of identity theft
  • A debt you paid or settled is still reported as unpaid
  • You are preparing for a mortgage or another large application and want your reports to be accurate first

When it is not

  • You cannot keep up with your minimum payments
  • Your reports are accurate and the real problem is the amount you owe
  • You want a lower interest rate or a single payment
  • A creditor is suing you. Talk to an attorney or a legal aid office.

In those cases, start with a nonprofit credit counselor. The Federal Trade Commission's guide on how to get out of debt explains how to find one and what to watch out for. Credit repair will not solve a debt problem, and it is better to know that before you pay anyone.

Can you need both?

Sometimes. Someone who settles or pays off old debts may later find that an account is still reported with the wrong balance or status. That is a reporting error, and it can be disputed. Deal with the debt first, then check that the reports reflect what happened. An account settled for less than the full balance will be reported as settled. That is accurate information, so it stays.

What you can do yourself

You can negotiate with your creditors and dispute credit report errors on your own, for free. Our guide to disputing errors on your credit report covers the second part.

Common questions

Is debt relief the same as credit repair?

No. Debt relief changes the debt itself, through a payment plan, a consolidation loan, a settlement or bankruptcy. Credit repair reviews your credit reports and disputes information that is inaccurate, incomplete or cannot be verified. It does not reduce what you owe.

Does debt consolidation hurt your credit?

It can go either way. Applying for a new loan usually adds a hard inquiry and a new account, which can lower a score for a while. Paying down credit card balances with the loan can lower your credit utilization, which can help. The effect depends on your own credit profile and on making the new payments on time.

Does Fix Your Credit Consulting offer debt consolidation loans?

No. Fix Your Credit Consulting is not a lender. Our service is credit repair consulting: reviewing your credit reports and disputing information that is inaccurate. If your main problem is the amount you owe rather than errors on your reports, a nonprofit credit counselor is usually a better first call.

Which should I do first, debt relief or credit repair?

If you are behind on payments or cannot afford your debts, deal with the debt first. If your payments are under control and your reports contain errors, credit repair is the place to start. A free consultation and a look at your credit report can help you tell which situation you are in.
